Passions Reflection
What?
When I was seven years old, I picked up Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for the first time in my life, and read it from cover to cover. I never looked back after that.
I’ve read Memoirs of a Geisha and Emma, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Eragon, and everything from Walt Whitman to Charles Dickens. I love to read. I have four books checked out from the library right now. I devour books with the hunger of a dragon, drink poetry like it’s nectar.
So I guess my passion could be defined as reading. But there’s only so many books I can read without getting the nagging feeling that something is missing – my own input.
So What?
Reading started out as a passion that now feeds my love for writing. Writing was merely a passive interest of mine throughout middle school, but I became more serious about it when I entered high school and started participating in – and winning – a plethora of writing competitions. My high school’s annual magazine was at the verge of discontinuity when I stepped forward and brought it back to life in the form of ‘Rhapsody’. Being so wrapped up in a world of words and being in touch with my vein of creativity was what kept my spirits high through what would have otherwise been a fairly demure high school experience.
At the end of high school, I realized I did enjoy writing – in particular, writing fiction. Although poetry is something I have dabbled in quite a bit as well, fiction is my mainstay, and what I depend on for constant support. It is wonderful to be lost in a world of your own creation and to craft your own characters with the precise complexity you desire; and I can’t get enough of it.
Now What?
Now that I’m in college and the bubble of high school has been burst, I’ve realized that I live in a world that extends beyond my city and country. My audience can widen exponentially as well, if that is what I want to work towards.
I’ve started out by becoming a part of the Editorial Team for Her Campus Cincinnati, for whom I will be publishing a monthly article. My first article, How to Pull the Perfect All-Nighter, is currently on the list of Most Read articles, which is very encouraging!
I am now planning to write my own novel; an ambitious project, to be sure, but I’ll get there someday! It’s going to be a fiction novel and I can see it all in my head – I just need to write it all out on paper. The National Novel Writing Month (nanowrimo), November, is right around the corner, and I’m hoping to participate and knock out 50,000 words next month. Wish me luck!
